Our aim is always to resolve matters as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, while keeping you fully informed at every step. Where children are involved, matters may overlap with care proceedings — we can advise on both within the same team under our family law service.
The law has changed
No-Fault Divorce
Since April 2022, couples in England and Wales can divorce without assigning blame to either party. Under the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, you simply make a statement that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. Contested divorces are no longer possible. We guide you through this updated process from application to Final Order.

Once financial terms are agreed, a court-approved Consent Order makes them legally binding and provides a clean break. We draft and submit all supporting documentation.
Separation Agreements
For couples separating without divorcing, or who wish to record financial arrangements pending divorce, we draft legally sound separation agreements.
Mediation & MIAM
Advice on whether mediation is suitable for your case, and support throughout the Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting process.
Cohabitation & Separation
Unmarried couples have very different legal rights on separation. We advise on property disputes, Schedule 1 child maintenance claims, and how to protect your position.
How divorce works in England & Wales
Under the no-fault divorce rules, the process follows a clear statutory timeline. Here is what to expect at each stage.
File the Divorce Application
Either one spouse (sole application) or both spouses together (joint application) submit a divorce application to the Family Court. The court fee is currently £593. We prepare and file all paperwork on your behalf.
20-Week Reflection Period
A mandatory 20-week period runs between the application being issued and the ability to apply for the Conditional Order. This period is used productively to negotiate and finalise financial arrangements.
Conditional Order
After 20 weeks, you apply for the Conditional Order (formerly the Decree Nisi). The court confirms it has no reason to refuse the divorce. This does not yet end the marriage.
Final Order
Six weeks and one day after the Conditional Order, you may apply for the Final Order (formerly the Decree Absolute), which legally ends the marriage. We advise clients not to apply until financial arrangements are concluded by a court-approved Consent Order.

We offer a range of funding options for family law matters and will advise you on the most appropriate arrangement for your case from the outset. Divorce and family proceedings are generally funded on a private paying basis, and we provide clear cost estimates before any work is undertaken.
Fixed fee services are available for straightforward uncontested divorce applications. For more complex financial remedy proceedings, we will provide a staged estimate of costs. Legal aid may be available in limited circumstances — for example, where domestic abuse is a feature of the case. We will advise you on eligibility at the outset.
