Applying for British citizenship
British citizenship through naturalisation is the culmination of the immigration journey. It gives you the right to a British passport, to vote, and to live and work in the UK without any immigration restrictions permanently.
There are two main routes to British citizenship: naturalisation for adults and registration for children and those with a claim by descent. Naturalisation is the route for adults who have obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or EU settled status and wish to become British citizens. The eligibility requirements are strict: you must have held ILR for at least 12 months (or have 3 years of residence if you are the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen), you must have lived in the UK for at least 5 years, you must not have been absent from the UK for more than 450 days in those 5 years, and you must not have been absent for more than 90 days in the final 12 months before your application. You must also meet the good character requirement, demonstrate English language ability at B1 level, pass the Life in the UK test, and demonstrate an intention to continue living in the UK or maintaining close connections with the UK. How long after getting ILR can I apply for British citizenship?
For the standard naturalisation route, you can apply after 12 months of holding ILR, provided you meet the overall 5-year residence requirement. For spouses and civil partners of British citizens, the residence requirement is 3 years and you can apply for naturalisation after holding ILR for 12 months.
