UK immigration law provides several routes for family members to join relatives who are settled or have refugee status in the UK. Each route has different eligibility criteria and evidential requirements.
Children under 18 can apply to join a parent or parents settled in the UK. Where both parents are settled, the application is straightforward provided the financial and accommodation requirements are met. Where only one parent is settled, the applicant must demonstrate either that the settled parent has sole responsibility for the child's upbringing, or that the other parent consents to the child relocating to the UK. Can a child join one parent in the UK?
A child can join one parent in the UK if that parent is the sole responsible parent, or if the other parent gives written consent to the child's relocation. The applying parent must demonstrate sole responsibility through evidence of day-to-day decision-making about the child's upbringing, including decisions about education, healthcare and welfare. Where both parents are alive but only one is settled in the UK, the consent of the other parent is essential — the Home Office takes this requirement very seriously. What is the adult dependant relative visa?
The adult dependant relative visa is the most restrictive family route in UK immigration law. The applicant must demonstrate that they require long-term personal care to perform everyday tasks (washing, dressing, eating) due to age, illness or disability, and that this care is not available in their home country — even if the UK-based family member were to fund it from abroad. In practice, this means demonstrating that the healthcare system in the home country cannot provide the required level of care. How does refugee family reunion work?

Do family visa applicants need to speak English?
It depends on the route. Spouse and partner visa applicants must demonstrate English at A2 level for the initial application and B1 for further leave to remain and ILR.
