The Appendix FM family route is the main pathway for spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners and fiancé(e)s to join their British or settled partner in the UK. These applications carry strict financial and evidential requirements.
The Appendix FM route covers several categories: spouse visas for married partners, civil partner visas, unmarried partner visas (requiring evidence of at least two years of continuous cohabitation), and fiancé(e) visas for those planning to marry or enter a civil partnership in the UK within six months of arrival. In April 2024, the minimum income requirement for spouse and partner visas was raised to £29,000 per year, a significant increase from the previous threshold of £18,600. The financial requirement can be met through employment or self-employment income, pension income, savings above £16,000 held for at least six months, or a combination of income and savings. Where the sponsor is self-employed, income is assessed based on the most recent full financial year. What is the financial requirement for a UK spouse visa in 2024?
The minimum income requirement for a UK spouse visa increased to £29,000 per year in April 2024. Where the sponsor's income falls just below the threshold, a combination of income and savings can be used. What counts towards the financial requirement?
The financial requirement can be met through several sources. Category A covers salaried employment income where the sponsor has been employed for 6 months or more. Self-employment income is assessed based on the most recent full financial year. Savings above £16,000 can be used, with the excess calculated to meet the income shortfall over 2.5 years. What evidence of a genuine relationship is needed?
The Home Office will assess whether your relationship is genuine and subsisting based on the totality of evidence submitted. Strong evidence includes records of cohabitation (bills, tenancy agreements, mortgage statements in joint names), communication evidence (messages, call logs, video call screenshots), photographs together over time, evidence of visits between countries, and statements from friends and family who know the relationship. For unmarried partners, you must additionally demonstrate 2 years of continuous cohabitation. Can I appeal if my spouse visa is refused?

This is important because many spouse visa refusals are overturned on appeal when additional evidence is presented. The appeal must be lodged within 14 days (in-country) or 28 days (out-of-country).
