Applying for a UK Student visa
The Student visa is one of the most popular UK visa categories, with hundreds of thousands of international students studying in the UK each year. A successful application requires a genuine offer from a licensed provider, the right evidence, and careful preparation.
To qualify for a UK Student visa, you must have an unconditional offer of a place on a course from a licensed student sponsor — a UK education provider approved by the Home Office to sponsor international students. Your sponsor will issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), an electronic reference number that forms the basis of your visa application. You must also meet the English language requirement: B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for degree-level courses and above, or B1 for courses below degree level. Financial requirements are equally important — you must demonstrate that you hold sufficient maintenance funds to cover your living costs for up to nine months. The required amount is currently £1,334 per month for courses in London and £1,023 per month for courses outside London, and these funds must have been held in your account (or your parent's account) for a consecutive 28-day period. The Home Office also applies a genuine student test and may refuse applications where there are doubts about the applicant's genuine intention to study. Additionally, there is an academic progression requirement — you generally cannot apply for a Student visa to study at the same or lower academic level as a qualification you have already completed in the UK, unless there are exceptional circumstances. While studying in the UK on a Student visa, there are important conditions you must comply with. Students studying at degree level or above at a higher education provider can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods, but self-employment and work as a professional sportsperson are not permitted. Students studying below degree level are limited to 10 hours per week. After successfully completing a qualifying UK degree, you may be eligible for the Graduate visa — a two-year unsponsored work visa (three years for PhD graduates) that allows you to work at any level in any role without a sponsor. The Graduate visa can only be granted once and provides a valuable bridge to longer-term routes such as the Skilled Worker visa. For those wishing to remain in the UK permanently, switching from the Graduate visa to a Skilled Worker visa — which requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor at the appropriate salary threshold — is the main route to settlement. It is also important to note that from January 2024, only research postgraduate students and government-funded students can bring dependants to the UK on a Student visa. What is a CAS and how do I get one?
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is an electronic reference number assigned by your UK education provider that confirms your offer of a place. It is not a physical document — it is a number that you provide in your visa application. Your education provider issues the CAS once they are satisfied that you have met all the conditions of your offer, including payment of any required deposit. Abraham Baron Solicitors work with you to ensure all conditions are met so your CAS is issued promptly and contains the correct information for your visa application.
How much money do I need to show for a Student visa?
You must demonstrate that you can cover your course fees (minus any amount already paid) plus monthly living costs for up to 9 months. The monthly living cost rate is £1,334 for London and £1,023 for institutions outside London. The funds must have been held in your account (or your parent’s account) for a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than 31 days before the date of application. How many hours can I work on a Student visa?
Students studying at degree level or above at a higher education provider can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods.
