How Military Hearing Loss Claims Are Assessed
The foundation of every military hearing loss claim is an independent audiological assessment carried out by a consultant audiologist or ear, nose, and throat specialist. This assessment involves a pure tone audiogram, which measures your hearing thresholds across a range of frequencies, together with speech discrimination testing and tympanometry. The results are expressed in decibels of hearing loss and plotted on an audiogram chart that shows the pattern and severity of your hearing damage. For tinnitus claims, additional assessments such as tinnitus matching, loudness discomfort levels, and questionnaires measuring the impact on daily life are used to establish severity.
The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme provides tariff-based awards for hearing loss and tinnitus, but these awards are capped and do not take into account your individual circumstances. For mild hearing loss with moderate tinnitus, civil awards typically range from £10,000 to £30,000. For moderate to severe hearing loss with significant tinnitus that disrupts sleep and concentration, awards can range from £30,000 to £80,000. In the most severe cases — profound deafness or hearing loss that has ended a military career and severely restricted civilian employment — total compensation including lost earnings can exceed £200,000.
