Mild traumatic brain injury includes concussion and is characterised by a brief loss of consciousness (less than 30 minutes) or a period of post-traumatic amnesia lasting less than 24 hours. While termed "mild", these injuries can cause significant and lasting symptoms including persistent headaches, cognitive difficulties and personality changes. Moderate TBI involves loss of consciousness for 30 minutes to 24 hours and post-traumatic amnesia lasting up to 7 days, with more pronounced cognitive and physical effects. Severe TBI involves loss of consciousness exceeding 24 hours and post-traumatic amnesia exceeding 7 days, often resulting in permanent disability requiring lifelong care and support.
How much compensation can I claim for a brain injury?
Brain injury compensation varies enormously depending on severity. The Judicial College Guidelines suggest general damages of £15,320 to £43,060 for minor brain injury, £43,060 to £219,070 for moderate brain injury, and £282,010 to £403,990 for very severe brain injury.
