Can I claim if I was not wearing a cycling helmet?
There is no legal requirement to wear a cycling helmet in the UK, so not wearing one does not automatically reduce your compensation. The leading case of Smith v Finch established that the court must consider whether a helmet would have actually prevented or reduced the specific injuries you suffered. If your injuries are to your legs, arms, or torso, the absence of a helmet is irrelevant. Where head injuries are involved, insurers may argue contributory negligence but the reduction, if any, is typically modest. Can I claim for a cycling accident caused by a pothole?
Yes. Local authorities have a legal duty under the Highways Act 1980 to inspect and maintain public roads and cycle paths. What if I was doored by a car?

The person who opened the door is liable under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. How long do I have to make a cycling accident claim?
